In recent years, Drosophila melanogaster has emerged as a powerful model system in which to study the genes and neural circuits that process sensory information and generate complex behaviors. Understanding such problems requires a multi-faceted approach, so that expertise in a variety of techniques is essential to any systems neuroscientist.

This summer school will train doctoral students and post-docs who are new to Drosophila neuroscience in cutting-edge approaches to understanding the development and function of neural circuits in this model organism. Attendees will participate in both lectures and practical sessions that will give them experience in a range of techniques used in Drosophila, from genetics and neuroanatomy to electrophysiology and computational analysis; and will help them to understand how these techniques can be used to gain fundamental insights into the neural substrates underlying complex behaviors. The summer school will take place in the state-of-the-art teaching facilities available at Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, a beautiful new riverside campus in central Lisbon, Portugal.

We offer 20 early stage researchers the opportunity to:

  • meet and learn from prominent scientists in fly systems neuroscience;
  • discuss science and related topics in an exquisite small forum;
  • learn hands-on how to perform state-of-the-art experiments to understand the development and function of circuits using the Drosophila model;
  • present their own research project in the form of a poster;
  • discuss the scientific process and how to overcome the problems faced in everyday research by thinking creatively;
  • build a peer group, creating strong bonds to support each other in becoming the Principal Investigators of tomorrow.

 

This summer school is organised in of a European doctoral training network, FLiACT – Systems neuroscience of Drosophila, from genes to circuits to behaviours”. A unique feature of the summer school is that late-stage graduate fellows of FLiACT will participate in teaching attendees in an intensive and inclusive environment.

 

To encourage participants from all backgrounds, this summer school will have a low registration fee (max. €495), and we will further offer registration fee waivers to 6 selected participants.
